This picture makes me remember my wedding day. What joy! Our annerversary is coming up in two weeks and it will be four years. Haven't really thought too much about what we are going to do, but that is because mostly we celebrate daily our family. One of our favorite things to do together is to walk. Orchard Chic Wedding - Invitations

These are the invitations to my sister's chic orchard wedding. All calligraphy was either handwritten (like the envelopes) or scanned into the computer from the original artwork and printed on each invitation. The envelopes were chocolate brown with ivory calligraphy!

I love doing single words to pop out on the invites. These were just her style.

Last but not least...the RSVP card and envelope. The envelopes were stamped with a custom stamp I made for them with their address. This stamp can be used in the future for Christmas cards and baby announcements (ok I'm thinking way ahead!). I loved the colors she picked. Can't wait to show off the wedding pictures....coming soon!

Want a fun idea for decorating a special party, like a shower! I made these "Love is in the air" banners for an Etsy shopper who was hosting a fabulous themed wedding shower. Who wouldn't love a bridesmaid this creative. Can't wait to show you the name tags she had custom made too!

A banner like this is sketched first then painted with a paint brush and calligraphy ink that is actually watered down paint, called gouache. Escort Cards/Tags: New Product!!!

I have had tons of clients wanting me to design their escort cards to coordinate with their wedding in addition to my custom calligraphy. Here are just two options I have made, but one is great....A TAG. This fun little tag can be attached to anything. One bride is attaching hers to starfish in a box of sand for her beachy wedding!!! We picked out crisp white cardstock, tan ink, and beautiful grosgrain ribbon with dashes!!! I can't wait to show you the photos. I feel like I am going crazy lately. I have forgot so many details you wouldn't believe. Part of it has to do with the fact that I am 4 1/2 months pregnant, but mostly it is due to the fact that my mind is busting at the seams with all the new avenues I am trying to go down with my business all at the same time. If I was only doing one new thing, or creating one new product I think I could handle it and my personal life. But, I have a dozen exciting new ventures in the pot at the same time. I spent the last two weeks busily planning and ordering, then yesterday finally writing!!! What are you talking about you ask. Jodi Bos of In Any Event, Modern Day Floral, Ben Harrison Photography and Sweet Cakes Design have opened a bridal boutique in downtown Grand Rapids, MI called A Modern Event. Just look at the setup below!!! I love it.

The grand opening is April 23 from 5-8pm. And Jodi has asked me to provide some new and exciting calligraphy for the amazing tablescapes and escort card table! I give you this little teaser...black, white, silver!!! I've been practicing for these new designs and am gitty with excitement. I hope to have some preview photos this week.

How to... Center a Guest List

When I ask a client how they want their envelopes justified (left, staggered, or centered) they usually pick centered. I agree it usually looks best. However the problem is that I usually get a guest list that looks like this:

Mr. John Henry.....1234 Sea Shore Drive......Holly, Michigan 49555

and the client wants me to eyeball that address and center it PERFECTLY on an envelope. Well, this is where I have to say it is impossible to get right all the time and I believe most calligraphers would agree. What happens is that I end up rewriting lots of addresses. I've decided that if I educate my clients on how to create a guest list that is easily centered using excell then we both win. I have an easier time writing out the addresses and the client gets practically perfect centered lines! Here is how....

To begin with create an alphabetized guest list just as I explain here. Be sure that the four line address is stacked in the same cell by pressing ALT + ENTER at the end of each line of address. Once you have completed these tasks highlight your entire list and press the centering tool on your toolbar. You will end up with a beautifully centered list like the one below. And should help to make your calligraphy more perfect than ever!

How to...Create an Alphabetized Excell Guest List

Most of the time I receive Guest Lists that have no organization to them at all. They especially are not alphabetized, which makes it almost impossible to go over a guest list with a client when I have questions. I end up making some statement like this, "Mr. Jones address which is on the page that has Mrs. Palmer at the top." Not exactly professional. Today, I would like to give a simple "How To" on creating an alphabetized guest list on Excell.

First on all, there is one extra step that you must take that most don't even realize. You must designate the very first column as "Last Name" only. It is this step alone that allows you to alphabetize your guest list. Type in every guest, couple or family as you see below.

IMPORTANT: I really want the three line address just like it is below, stacked. You can do this very easily by pressing ALT + ENTER at the end of each line to create another line for the address. Press them together when the cursor is at the end of the line of address. See my next How To blog on centering addresses.

After you have two or three columns filled in (only two if you don't have inner envelopes) highlight ALL your information in one box just like it is below. Then move your cursor to the tool bar at the top and click the button that says "AZ" with an arrow pointing down, also known as "Sort Ascending". You can see that button highlighted below.

After you press the "Sort Acending" button (or what I call the alphabetizing button) your information will be alphabetized!!! It is that easy. Check it out below. The best part is that you can do this periodically as you go along making your guest list to help you keep track if you already have Grandma on the list or not! Just follow the same directions over again. Excell is super easy if you just use the right tools!

Envelope Addressing Etiquette for Outer Envelope Only Invitations::Including Children

Having inner envelopes is the formal way to list childrens names on an invitation normally. But if your invitation does not have inner envelopes, the first (listed below) is the most accepted "formal" way of all. I prefer the second if there are more than 2 children as it gets really sloppy and sometimes impossible to write it nice the first way. You can use different options for different families depending on how many children, how well you know them, etc. It's your day so you choose. ALWAYS, list by age and give a separate invitation to children over 18 years of age!

Envelope Addressing Etiquette for Outer Envelope Only Invitations

Many brides are opting for a less formal invitation, for very good reasons, too. They are saving paper and money by choosing folder or enveloped invitations which don't require an inner envelope. Or they are just saying no to the inner envelope completely creating a laid back style that is fresh and new.

What happens with fresh and new is that there are not many resources to help us use proper etiquette to address the envelopes to our loved ones. Don't fear. I have compiled a useful guide that gives you options, choose the one that fits your wedding best. But be certain that you are addressing in a way that includes everyone, including children. Yet still gives your wedding the style you want it to have. This guide will be a two part post to help keep it short for those looking for something in particular.

The first post includes standard outer envelopes with only adults.

Traditionally, envelopes are addressed this way:

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith
1234 Main Street
Anytown, Michigan 4444

Although some brides want it to be more personal. They would write the names informally this way, but only if there is no inner envelope and you don't want it to be formal:

John and Nancy Smith
1234 Main Street
Anytown, Michigan 4444

If you are addressing envelopes to an unmarried couple living together (I also included the proper way to write out an apartment):

Mr. John Smith
Ms. Nancy Smith
1234 Main Street
Apartment 345

Baby Boy

I haven't shared any photos of our adorable baby boy with you, since this blog isn't for family life but I thought that all of you would enjoy to see his smiling face. His name is Tristan and he is 7 months old today. We took these photos on our vacation in California at Laguna Beach. Below is my amazing husband Derrick and me with the little guy. He is such a joy and yes he is always this photogenic.

New Logo and Business Card from Plush Paper

I love new friends, but when they have talents and expertise that extend far beyond that which you have they seem to be heaven sent. I feel that way about Kathleen of Plush Paper Creations. She designed this fabulous new logo for my business including blog banner, website banner, and this beautiful new business card design. I have been telling everyone I was in the process of ordering new cards (I actually did not know where to begin). Then steps in Kathleen, the darling, and not only creates them all in the right format but tells me how to order the uber cheap (Vista Print) and get them even faster. So, thanks to you Kathleen. Looking Back::Event Three

If you are looking for some amazing inspiration for a warm summer wedding, check out this oneg that the "practically perfect in every way" Jodi Bos (or was that Mary Poppins) of In Any Event put on last August. And I am so happy to report will be featured as a three page spread in the 2009 Fall/Winter issue of The Knot!

It started out with these exceptional invites and captivating calligraphy that I named Lizzy after the bride.

Then comes the decorations, bringing together the fun color scheme...orange, blue and green!

I just adore how the escort cards were just growing out of some grass!

I can't help but stare at this dining room and love how the outdoors were brought inside!

Looking Back::Event Two

A June wedding is always spectacular, but add an outside tent and traditional colors and you have a beauty! In Any Event designed this spread and asked me to take on this traditional font that I call Christine. Thank you to Coastline Studios and Holly Henderson Photography for the amazing photos.

The Outer Envelopes turned out great...but with how long the guest list was I thought I would never finish!

Looking Back::Event One

I thought it would be interesting to give some highlights to the events that I have done this year and descibe the photos to help my readers get to know my history a little bit. My first big event was last June...the 21st. It was a 50th birthday summer solstice! And the colors reflected just that. Orange. Yellow. Grass Green. In Any Event threw a wonderful party...so glad that my calligraphy got to be a part of it!

I learned a brand new font for this event...I call it Eleanor. It is fun and whimsical. The client thought it matched the invitation font great.

I had a great time making the labels for these escort candles. Each guest got to take one home with their name written with swoops galore.

Adorning the tables was my sweet little place cards...with fancy y's!Check out the beautiful flowers!!!

I was able to try out one of these silk chair pads...at eight months pregnant I thought they were really nice!A view of the finished room...My college friend Ryan Prins takes beautiful photographs doesn't he!

I didn't get to see this cake in person...but wow. I just needed to share it. Don't you think it is beautiful! Stay tuned for some other beautiful events...and fun calligraphy for the calligraphy lover in you.

All In A Day

Today is a very interesting day. I am in the process of getting my business name out to the world and networking to find just the right people that can make it all a little simpler. At the same time I am living. Living a life that does not revolve around a website or portfolio but rather around making baby Tristan smile, making deadlines, and getting dinner on the table. It all ends up looking like a balancing act and you all, my family, and God are my audience.

When it is all said and done, I like my life. I have an extremely, wonderful husband mostly to thank for that. Besides the fact that I know I can't do it all, it is fun to play mother, wife, and calligrapher. I just hope that every life that I affect thinks that I am doing an okay job of it all.

What exactly did I accomplish today? Well, I have been contacting a great woman named Kathleen from Plush Paper, a jazzy invitation company located in Metro-Detroit. She is going to help me create a business logo. So now I am on the hunt for some ideas of what I want. I also am working with In Any Event on an awesome event this week. I have been busy creating some beautiful calligraphy in the new font! Here is an escort card sample.

The colors for this event are spectacular. The light pink is shown here. Can't wait to show you some more photos! Check out the other great events I have been a part of in my portfolio!

This week I was able to be of assistance to a couple who had some invitation problems and needed their envelopes addressed quicker than they could themselves. I (Designs by Robyn Love) came in to help them by using this beautiful font to create a memorable invitation envelope. The photo is a dark gold envelope with ivory ink. They turned out beautiful, but didn't photograph well in full color. The outer envelopes are ivory with dark gold ink. Look forward to some exciting photos of them.

One issue that did come up was color. The bride said gold paper and in my mind I thought yellow gold. But she meant dark gold and I realized I we needed to adjust ink colors when they finally came. Moral of the story: As a bride, you can never be too descriptive about what you want. And if you want to get exactly what you want, say exactly what you want down to every last detail (and don't hesitate to double check, us vendors appreciate the help in getting it right the first time around!). Right Around the Corner

Wedding season is right around the corner and many brides-to-be are looking for some advice about making sure their invitations are going to get out in the mail in time. As a past bride and a current calligrapher, I have a few pieces of advice to keep you right on track.

If you haven't started compiling your guests' most current addresses all in one spot start now while you still have a little time on your hands.
Best place to get those all together at: your PC! Allowing for easy emailing to a calligrapher or printing up yourself to make forgetting someone a lot less likely. (Calligrapher secret #1, I cross out each person on my printed list as I go to make sure I didn't miss anyone.)
Order stationary early and politely check up now and then that everything is on schedule!
Give yourself more than enough time for addressing those envelopes. It is taxing for any seasoned calligrapher, let alone a novice bride. Then last thing you would want is to pull on all-nighter on account of your invitations! Save your energy for the Honeymoon.

I'm very excited for this year's season of bliss. I love to see all the ingenious ideas that come from the hearts of bride's across the nation and also those ridiculously talented event coordinators who pride themselves in making every event the dream that is Wedding. The Beginning

How did I start in Calligraphy? I thought that would be the best topic to begin my blog with. My husband and I were married in July of 2007. As a fun project I thought that I would learn a pretty font to address my envelopes and escort cards with. Having always practiced new fonts, this was very easy. I practiced over and over the font "Radagund" and was soon able to produce a very like copy. I received lots of compliments from our family and friends, but thought nothing more of it besides an interesting ability and personal hobby. However, my older sister didn't think it the case. Being personally associated with the event planner of In Any Event, she felt it her personal responsibility to describe my abilities, however inaccurate they actually were, with deep affection and spirit. This began my relationship with Jodi Bos of In Any Event, who I am forever indebted to. For the last nine months I have been busily learning new fonts, driving to the post office three days in a row, addressing over 300 envelopes in record time, pulling almost all-nighters, and loving (almost) every minute of it. Am I a pro? I can't say that I am close yet. But I am developing a distinct personal style with every stoke of my pen. I believe that my work will speak for itself.
